At Eterna MD, under the expert guidance of Dr. Carlos Mercado, we prioritize patient comfort, safety, and optimal outcomes in all of our procedures. One key aspect of our approach to liposuction is the avoidance of general anesthesia—a principle we have strongly advocated for in our practice for more than 15 years.

The Benefits of Avoiding General Anesthesia in Liposuction

One of the primary benefits of avoiding general anesthesia during liposuction is a faster recovery with reduced risk of complications. General anesthesia can lead to a range of pulmonary complications, such as pneumonia or blood clots. By opting for local anesthesia and sedation, we help mitigate these risks and provide a safer, more efficient procedure.

At Eterna MD, we use Tumescent Fluid, a specialized mixture of normal saline, lidocaine, epinephrine, and bicarbonate. This fluid is delivered directly into the adipose (fat) tissue, numbing the area and making the procedure comfortable without general anesthesia. While liposuction under general anesthesia may seem quicker due to fewer steps, using tumescent fluid allows for more precise sculpting of the body, giving us greater control and flexibility.

Why Perform Only One Liposuction Procedure per Day?

Tumescent fluid enables us to shift from general to local anesthesia and perform liposuction with enhanced precision. However, proper oral sedation is still required before the infiltration of tumescent fluid. Our sedation method combines medications that ensure relaxation while minimizing any discomfort.

Once the tumescent fluid is administered, we can begin the liposuction procedure. Since the patient remains awake and alert, they can follow instructions to adjust their position, ensuring the best possible angles for sculpting and contouring. This approach enhances the overall precision and aesthetic result of the liposuction.

What is VASER Liposuction?

VASER Liposuction, or Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction, is an advanced technology widely recognized for achieving high-definition body contouring. VASER is particularly beneficial for patients with fibrotic fat tissue—such as those with previous liposuction procedures—and is ideal for those seeking refined, detailed results.

The process for VASER liposuction begins similarly to traditional liposuction. After administering sedation and tumescent fluid, an ultrasound probe is introduced to help break down and liquefy the fat tissue. This makes the fat easier to remove and allows for a more gentle, controlled procedure than traditional methods. One of the additional benefits of VASER liposuction is its ability to promote skin tightening, enhancing the overall contours and smoothness of the treated areas.

Can VASER Liposuction Be Combined with Other Technologies?

At Eterna MD, we utilize various advanced technologies to achieve the best possible results for our patients. For example, VASER liposuction can be effectively combined with J-Plasma (Renuvion), a technology designed to tighten and rejuvenate skin. This procedure is typically performed at the end of the VASER liposuction, using the same incision openings to minimize scarring and enhance the skin’s appearance.

In some cases, VASER can be combined with Water-Assisted Liposuction (WAL). This combination can be particularly beneficial when a precise amount of tumescent fluid or fat transfer is desired to areas like the glutes. The water-assisted technique helps infuse the tumescent fluid, and VASER is used to melt the fat, making the transfer process smoother gently.

What Does Recovery Look Like After VASER Liposuction?

Recovery from VASER liposuction generally involves typical post-liposuction effects, including swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Compression garments, often referred to as “fajitas,” can help reduce swelling and improve the healing process. Mobilization—or moving and gently stretching the body—plays a crucial role in speeding up recovery and achieving the best results.

Since awake liposuction is used in conjunction with tumescent fluid, recovery tends to be faster compared to traditional methods. The absence of general anesthesia also contributes to fewer complications and a more comfortable recovery process.
