The Benefits of Staying Hydrated

Start Reading

It’s well-known that we should all be drinking more water. But how much water, and why? Have you drunk your 8 glasses of water today? If you answered no, as many others might have as well, chances are you’re dehydrated!

But how much water is really needed, and why? Water helps carry nutrients around the body, including cells and organs, and helps stimulates the digestive system. Without water, the most important processes in your body required to keep you healthy and alive start malfunctioning.

The amount your body requires can vary depending on age, weather, and daily activity levels. As a general guide, if you feel thirsty—you’re already in the early stages of dehydration. The trick is to stay hydrated throughout the day as opposed to consuming too much water in one go.

Here are our tips to keep your body and skin hydrated:

  • Consume fresh fruits and vegetables that naturally contain large amounts of water such as cucumbers, celery, watermelon, and oranges.
  • Consume organic and caffeine-free tea throughout the day.
  • Keep a rosewater mist spray with you during the day to keep your skin feeling supple.
  • Always wear sunscreen—even in the wintertime!
  • Treat yourself to a hydrating facial.

Many people aren’t drinking enough water, especially in hot weather. You risk dehydration if you aren’t drinking enough water to meet your body’s needs. The amount you drink can vary for many reasons, including age, weather, and activity (whether you are exercising or sitting for 8 hours, for example). Older people don’t sense thirst as much as younger people, leading to more cases of dehydration for people reaching a certain stage in their lives.

The rule of thumb is simple: if you feel thirsty, you’re already in the early stages of dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids regularly throughout the day to ward off thirst, at least 30 to 50 ounces (1 to 1.5 liters). Don’t drink it all in one go, since your kidneys aren’t able to process all of the water at once.
